self-belief

‘Still I Rise’ by Maya Angelou

“You may write me down in history with your bitter, twisted lies.” This is the opening line, it shows emotion and power. An important line in this sentence is “you may write me down in history,” as it links to slavery in America. “You” is a good way of starting it because it is accusing the author already, and the use of the words is powerful.

The poem ‘Still I Rise’ is about rising from slavery, hope, and self-belief. Her story is about overcoming oppression as a black female. And to inspire many, such as Oprah Winfrey and Nicki Minaj.

I think she wrote the poem because she wanted to prove her self-worth and how powerful she is.

The repetition of “still I rise” is effective because it shows power and emotion, it brings attention to the reader by using repetition.
